Austen’s trademark features are on full display: insightful observation, astute characterization, and dazzling wit. The reader is plunged into a world which is socially and linguistically very different from the world of today. The main theme is undoubtedly the danger of excessive sensibility, or emotionality. There is a dual plot and dual heroines. The main characters, Elinor and Marianne, each pursue her romance according to her temperament and beliefs. They are at opposite ends of the sense and sensibility spectrum, and each has an unhappy love affair at the start of the story. They each take “the scenic route” to their final relationship destination, and you will enjoy all the stops along the way!
